So the problem is kind of two fold - FTM screws up the order when it does an export, and then RootsMagic renumbers everything based on the order in the GEDCOM file. I imported that GEDCOM file into a new empty RootsMagic database, and lo and behold, they do get renumbered by RootsMagic - because they are not in ID order in the GEDCOM file, RootsMagic reads the GEDCOM file in order and assigns the ID numbers as it goes, so that list above, I've checked the first 5, then are numbered 1 through 5 in the new RootsMagic file. RootsMagic 9 is the award-winning genealogy software which makes researching, organizing, and sharing your family history easy Whether you're a beginner or an experienced professional, RootsMagic is the perfect tool for you Learn More Buy Now Try It Free. When I export a GEDCOM file from FTM, the first thing I notice is that it's not in ID number order - I have no idea what order it's in - here are the first 30 individuals (after I changed things to get the and 1 NAME xxxxx onto the same line in the file for easy comparison with other files).Ġ INDIđ NAME Eliza Olive Lavinia /Scarlett/Ġ INDIđ NAME Honora Philomena /Fitzgibbon/īut when I do a sort on that to put it into ID number order, then it lines up exactly with the same list from the GEDCOM file generated by Reunion - so no numbers were changed, just that FTM dumped them out in some bizarre order. That has preserved the ID numbering that was in the GEDCOM file from Reunion. But I do have my database in it, exported by GEDCOM from Reunion, then imported to FTM. But that requires it to keep the same numbering, as I have many links from and to my WordPress articles to certain people.Ī little more here - I also have Family Tree Maker for Macintosh installed, but like RootsMagic I don't really use it much. The only reason I would use it for now, is just to import and export a gedcom that is easier to load into my TNG website. But as FTM has been continued, RM is just sitting there. I bought RM 7 when FTM was going to stop and I needed an app that could sync with Ancestry. I don't really use RootsMagic to be honest, I find it less easy to use and less nice than FTM. The smaller numbers have moved by one, the larger ones have changed completely randomly. Person I1 simply doesn't exist.Īfter importing into RootsMagic, I became I1, my parents 29365 and 2, my grandparents 3, 4, 9. In my FTM database - for some reason - I am I1083, my parents are I30482 and I3, my grandparents are I4, I5, I6 and I28919. The other thing I wonder about is how to find out a Source Number - my whole filing system of Sources is predicated on knowing the source number so I can write it onto the paper if it's a paper copy and file that by source number order. I have discussed this (about seeing what RIN people have) with Bruce Buzbee at either RootsTech or FGS or NGS within the last couple of years as he approaches the release of RootsMagic 8. So I'm not sure what's going on there - when I made the new RootsMagic file this morning I did tell it to put the ID number after the name so I could see at a glance if the people had been renumbered. UPDATE: Actually it's not quite that simple - my previous RootsMagic file that was incorrectly numbered had come from - so the path had been Reunion GEDCOM export that became an Ancestry upload, and then I used RootsMagic to either download that from Ancestry, or I downloaded it myself from Ancestry and then imported it into Reunion. My Dad is 2 in my file, but in RootsMagic he was 4382, my Mum is 3 in my file (you see the pattern?) in RootsMagic she was 13173. This was using a newly updated install of RootsMagic on my Macintosh.īut at some time in the past RootsMagic HAS done this as the file I mess around with in RootsMagic that I created a few years ago (maybe when RootsMagic 7 was released and I imported a GEDCOM file from Reunion) was renumbered, with no apparent logic as to how - I'm I1 in my file, but in RootsMagic I was 301. Oh, it exports the reports in html, as well as pdf, image, etc.I have just tried this for myself, and found that RootsMagic didn't renumber the ID numbers from a GEDCOM file from Reunion 12 that I imported in to RootsMagic. I'll see if I can work on trying to put some of the links in between the tables before the trial expires. If there were foreign keys this software would automatically link them. I guess the RM folks must manage their data in the program code instead of using foreign keys to enforce integrity. It would cost about 300.00/year to actually buy:
